The Dickensian character, Mr. Bumble, upon being advised that the law supposes that his wife acts under his direction, exclaimed "if the law supposes that, the law is a ass — a idiot". Since that time, commentators and pundits of every stripe have embraced the phrase "the law is an ass". Notwithstanding the best efforts of legislators and judges, I expect, from time to time, the law is still an ass. Not this time.
